In this tutorial I will be showing you how to create a party hat.

Step 1:

Create a canvas of any size ( I used a large canvas as I do for most of my work)

Step 2:

Draw you hat shape using the pen tool and select the colour you wish you hat to be. Then apply the following blending options.

Step 3:

Duplicate this layer and change the blending options to the following:

Step 4:

Duplicate again change the blending options to the following:

Step 5:

Duplicate again and apply the following blending options (this is easy isn't it?)

Step 6:

Using the pen tool draw the basic shape for a highlight and add the following blending options.

Step 7:

Use the "fern" custom shape and draw a shape like below. Adding the blending options as seen below.

Step 8:

Duplicate and flip horizontally, change the colour to a silver colour with a hint of your main colour to emulate reflection.

Step 9:

Duplicate again and flip vertically. Add a "layer mask" and using a soft brush remove some of the top silver to let some of the main colour show through.

Step 10:

Arrange the 'fringe' till you like it and add it into your main image. Final result:

Your tut ROCKS Alias, didn't just show how to make a party hat, but one exactly like the image I had from the web, (shiny metallic hats!) and thanx for the quick reply for little ol me Tip-Hat.gif Now, as usual I was getting and then got a little lost- specificallly where we apply the outer glow, because of using the pen tool
O made the shape using the 3 diff pen options, and then tried applying the glow but i can't get it to work, just get a pen outline in white or a solid white shape etc. Really appreciate some help with this. Thanks so much for the tut!

thankx Alias, I tried that (you do mean in the 'outer glow' effects box right?) Also tried having white as the colour on the top tool bar for pen, just ended up wiht a big white shape, with a glow that wasn't really blended arounnd it, and when I left the colour the same as the pruple shape, just had white in the outer glow box, it still loolks weird(boy, I'rm really bad at this lol) or don't quite get the pen tool- I'm using the first pen(shape layers)...layer path didn't work, and couldn't use 'fill pixels'. here's what it looked like(shape on left is first thing I mentioned, and shape on right: second thing
