Welcome to Lava tutorial for Photoshop! This may not be the best lava tutorial, but I like it!
Ok, so lets start.
Make a new document, and set it 500x500 pixels.
Click "D" to reset your colors, and click ALT+BACKSPACE to paint your document with your forerground color, in this case, black.
Make a new layer by going Layer->New->Layer... or clicking New Layer icon in Layers pallete.
Take the Elliptical Maraquee Tool, and make a half-circle in top left corner, click "X" to switch your forerground and background color, and click ALT+BACKSPACE
to fill what is selected with your forerground color. Give that layer a blur of 1. Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur...
Pixels: 1
Ripple that layer a bit by going Filter->Distort->Ripple
Amount: 70-80
Size: Large
Duplicate layer twice by going Layer->Duplicate or by clicking CTRL+J.
Give a first layer a blur of 10. Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur...
Pixels : 10
And the second 30.
Click CTRL+E twice while you have selected the top layer to merge the layers we created into one layer. You should have something like this for now:
Click to view attachment
Now make a new layer, take the Pen Tool, and draw a small, long line from circle, it will be squarish now, like this:
Click to view attachment
Now select the Convert Point Tool, from Pen Tool pallete, then click, hold, and drag a point of a line to make it circleish, like this:
Click to view attachment
If you think a point is too far, or not needable, no need to delete, just hold CTRL button, then you can drag a point around, or just click on it, to make it
squareish again.
Now once you are done with your line, right click on its layer and click Rasterize Type or Rasterize Layer, now lets give that line a bit of blur and ripple.
Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur
Pixels: 1
and
Filter->Distort->Ripple
Amount: 120
Size: Medium
You can tweak those settings of course, to get better look, or different results smile.gif.
Now make few more line layers, but give another Ripple ammount. Ill make 3, and that looks like this:
Click to view attachment
Now, when your done with that merge all layers but last one, probably called Background Layer, and the Top one, the half cirlce layer, so you have all line layers on one layer, like this:
Click to view attachment
Now, duplicate line layers two times, and blur it.
First Duplicated layer:
Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur
Pixels: 5
Second Duplicated Layer:
Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blue
Pixels: 20
This blue layers can also be tweaked, to get bigger or lesser glow, you can make more or less layers, of course appearing on the shot, if you are working with real-life picture, which I will show later smile.gif.
When your done blurring, merge all layers, but last one, once again, that is called Background Layer.
So, now you should have this:
Click to view attachment
Now, lets make a new layer, click "D" to reset colors if they arent already, and click CTRL+BACKSPACE to fill background with our forerground color.
Put it below all those lines layer, and merge both layer, if you dont do this, you wont be able to add a color!!!
Now, put lines layer blending mode to screen, just in any case you are working with real life picture, if not, not need to put blending mode to screen.
You should now have this:
Click to view attachment
Now all whats left is to add some color, so select line layer, and go
Image->Adjustments->Color Balance
Be sure to check Preserve Luminosity box, or color will be strange and enormous :s, lol, try it out xD.
Ok, so I usually play with Cyans/Reds, and negative Yellows/Blues.
And so in the end you should have something like this smile.gif :
Of course, appearing on the color you also get a whole diffrent look, like this one:
Click to view attachment
and this one:
Click to view attachment
It is only about your taste bigwink.gif.
This is my try at doing this effect in real-life picture:
Click to view attachment
And here I kinda painted the sky:
