The last step was just covering the unwanted white areas with the pencil tool.

There are many images you can play with and get fantastic results. For example try this on a smoke image... You'll get a tribal look and so forth. Hope you enjoyed this quick and efficient tutorial Waiting for your results in this thread.

I also remember Red's tut . Will be waiting for other results too. I find this a fun and quick way to get this look... Any other method I tried took a lot longer to achieve...
