We are going to create this metal looking ring which you can use to make a splash page or anything else you might find this ring useful for.
1) Open a new document 500*500 pixels white background, create a new layer,
Popup your grid using: Ctrl+
2) Now take your selection tool
make a selection 5 boxes in height make it as big as the document
3) Select your gradient toolhttp://www.13dots.com/boogie/tools/gradientool.gif you might notice I didn’t used black at the end a dark grey will make it look better.

4) Now go down with your gradient tool as shown in the screenshot below.

*tip* the futher you go with the line the longer stretch the gradient will be.
5) Now make a new selection in the gradient bar you just made in the middle of it

And fill it again but this time with a lighter shade of grey.
Now you will have the following.

6) Now go to: Filter – Distort – Polar Coordinates, make sure the first box is selected Rectangular to Polar. I know there are still some jagged edges we are going to fix this later in this tutorial by modifying some blending options.

7) Now put you ring in the middle and use your eclipse selectiontool
to make the following selection. And press Delete this will result in removing the selection you made.
*tip* by dragging your selection to the right when you got the selection tool selected you will have 2 identical eclipse cut out of the ring
8) We are going to make it look a little more real by applying a light rendering on it.
Filter – Render – Lighting Effects.

9) Now we are going to do something about those jagged edges of the ring. Open up your blending options and select: Drop Shadow use the following settings.

10) We also going to apply some bevel and emboss to it… so you really getting that 3d feeling. By playing around with the Soften and Depth settings you can create your own custom bevel and emboss. I used the following.

Now you can apply more blending options if you prefer that but I stopped here and got this as my final result.
