Here's "my" finished result, it tends to be different everytime you make the lightning ( due to the difference clouds filter )

1. MAke a new image with transparent background (i did 300x300 pixels)...Press d to reset the colour, choose the gradient tool then create a gradient from the top left to the bottom right of the transparent image.
2. Filter > Render > Clouds...Filter > Render > Difference Clouds...then press Ctrl + F if you want to give it more detail which would result in more strikes of lightning...
3. Image > Adjustments > Invert(Ctrl + I)
4. Hit Ctrl + L Then mess about with the arrows below the graph until you start to see the image appear as lightning. THese are my settings below..

5. This step is optional, it is mainly to add some colour and life to your image, and make it look more realistic...
Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation (Ctrl + U). Then tick the colorize box and move the arrows to your liking to change the colour, darkness etc...
YOUR DONE!
( If you have an idea of how to add this effect into an image, remember to make the lightning in a new layer, and set the blend mode to SCREEN in [B]Blending options[B] )
I really hope this tutorial has helped you out, i probably made it sound harder than it actually is, but i'm kinda new to writing out tutorials, so the tutorials will get better, but if there anyway i can help just ask
